Can I or my family collect EI if business does not do well?

Generally speaking, you do not deduct EI premiums for yourself or immediate family employed in your corporation. If the family member is not a shareholder owning more than 40% of the corporation’s shares, then each situation must be looked at individually. There is a list of criteria used but in simple terms CRA reviews the conditions of employment being similar or different to unrelated employees.
